Why Aurora / Why Custom

Aurora businesses outgrow spreadsheets quietly, and pay for it for years.

Aurora is the second-largest city in Illinois: roughly 180,000 people spread across Kane, DuPage, Kendall, and Will counties along the Fox River. It is a city built on layers: a manufacturing legacy that runs from the old Caterpillar-era plants through dozens of mid-sized industrial operators on the east side; a healthcare backbone anchored by Rush Copley on the Ogden Avenue corridor and Mercy Medical Center up on Highland Avenue; a Latino-rooted small business density on the East Side that drives an enormous share of day-to-day commerce; and a growing professional-services corridor pushing west toward Naperville and north toward Batavia.

Downtown adds another layer that most software vendors flying in from the coasts never see. Stolp Island has quietly rebuilt itself around the arts: the Paramount Theatre’s Broadway series, the John C. Dunham Aurora Arts Center on Stolp Avenue, and Waubonsee Community College’s 132,000-square-foot downtown campus on River Street, which also houses an Illinois Small Business Development Center. That mix pulls performing-arts organizations, venues, restaurants, creative firms, and early-stage founders into a few walkable blocks, and every one of those operations runs on scheduling, ticketing-adjacent workflows, membership data, and box-office-night logistics that a generic spreadsheet handles badly.

What ties most Aurora businesses together is software they have outgrown. The patient intake spreadsheet a practice near the Rush Copley medical corridor has been emailing back and forth for eight years. The dispatch board a service contractor in West Aurora keeps on a whiteboard. The staffing schedule a retail operator near Chicago Premium Outlets (160-plus stores at I-88 and Farnsworth pulling shoppers from the whole region) rebuilds by hand every time the season turns. The inventory counts an east-side warehouse operator tracks in three places that never agree. The QuickBooks-to-spreadsheet-to-CRM dance a downtown professional services firm runs every Friday. None of these are visible problems: they are time taxes that compound quietly, year after year.

Hunter Creative Media & Design is a custom web application development studio based right here in Aurora. We build the software your business actually runs on: client portals, internal dashboards that save hours every week, scheduling and dispatch systems, intake forms with logic, automations between the tools you already pay for, and full SaaS platforms for Aurora founders building their first product. This is not marketing-site web design. It is software development: longer projects, deeper relationships, ongoing maintenance.

The advantage of hiring an Aurora-based studio for this work is not a sales-page talking point. It is the same time zone, the same area code, the ability to drive over for a workshop instead of mailing-it-in over a 2am Slack thread, and code you actually own, not a no-code subscription you’ll be renting forever. We accept a small number of custom application projects each quarter and we are deliberate about which ones we take.

Who We Build For / Aurora

Four corners of Aurora’s economy that outgrow their tools first.

A city of 180,000 doesn’t have one software problem. It has different ones on every side of the river. These are the four Aurora business clusters where custom application work comes up most, and what it usually looks like when it does.

01 · The Medical Corridors

Practices Around Rush Copley & Mercy

The Ogden Avenue corridor around Rush Copley and the Highland Avenue stretch near Mercy Medical Center seed the whole city with independent practices: specialists, therapy clinics, dental groups, med spas, home-health agencies. The hospital systems have enterprise software; the independents around them mostly don’t. Patient intake that starts as a web form instead of a clipboard, HIPAA-aware document portals, and scheduling that syncs with the practice management system are the three builds we scope most on this side of town.

02 · Downtown / Stolp Island & the Arts

Venues, Creative Firms & River Street Founders

The Paramount Theatre and the Dunham Aurora Arts Center anchor a downtown where the customers arrive in evening surges, memberships and season passes matter, and every venue, restaurant, and studio lives on event-night logistics. Add Waubonsee’s downtown campus and the SBDC pulling early-stage founders into the same blocks, and you get a district that commissions booking systems, membership platforms, and first-product SaaS MVPs, often from a founder who started with a workshop two streets over.

03 · The Industrial East Side

Manufacturing, Warehousing & Logistics

The east-side corridors off Farnsworth and the I-88 interchanges hold the descendants of Aurora’s manufacturing century: fabricators, packagers, distributors, and light-industrial operators whose inventory and job tracking still lives in spreadsheets a generation younger than the machines. We build the wrap-around layer: inventory systems with barcode scanning, job and order tracking, shipping dashboards, and shop-floor screens that work on a tablet without an IT department.

04 · The Retail & Hospitality Ring

Premium Outlets Orbit & Multi-Location Operators

Chicago Premium Outlets pulls regional traffic to Farnsworth and I-88 every weekend, and a ring of restaurants, hotels, salons, and service retail lives off that gravity. The operational problems here are seasonal staffing schedules rebuilt by hand, gift and loyalty programs running on paper, and owners of two or three locations with no single screen showing how the day is going. Focused internal tools, not enterprise platforms, are usually the right-sized fix.

What We Build / Aurora

Six kinds of custom builds we ship for Aurora businesses.

These overlap. A real Aurora project usually combines two or three: an internal tool plus a couple of integrations for an east-side distributor, or a patient portal plus a scheduling layer plus an automation for an Ogden Avenue practice. Treat the six below as shapes, not a menu; the actual build is always specific to your operation.

BUILD 01 · INTERNAL TOOLS

Internal Dashboards & Operations Tools

The system your Aurora team logs into to run the business. Patient queues for a practice off Ogden, order pipelines for an east-side fabricator, inventory counts that finally agree with the warehouse floor, KPI screens for a multi-location owner. Replaces the shared spreadsheet that’s been one wrong delete away from disaster since the second location opened.

STACK: Next.js · Postgres · Auth · Role-based permissions
BUILD 02 · CLIENT PORTALS

Client & Patient Portals

Secure logins for the people you serve: patients of an independent Aurora practice booking and reviewing care, financial clients downloading documents from a downtown advisory firm, real estate clients tracking a Fox Valley transaction. White-labeled to your brand, integrated with your site, no per-seat SaaS fees climbing every renewal.

STACK: Auth · Document storage · Notifications · Audit logs
BUILD 03 · SCHEDULING / DISPATCH

Scheduling & Dispatch Systems

Booking systems for healthcare practices, dispatch boards for HVAC and home service contractors working out of West Aurora and Montgomery, multi-location calendars for service businesses. Mobile-first because the field crew is on a phone, not a desktop.

STACK: Calendars · SMS via Twilio · Route mapping · Mobile UI
BUILD 04 · INTEGRATIONS

API Integrations & Data Pipes

Connecting the tools your Aurora business already pays for so they stop being silos. QuickBooks to your CRM. Stripe to your accounting. Your website forms into HubSpot, Google Sheets, and Slack. The MLS feed into your real estate pipeline, the EHR export into your recall list. We wrote a plain-English primer on how API integrations actually work if you want the longer version.

STACK: REST APIs · Webhooks · OAuth · Job queues
BUILD 05 · AUTOMATIONS

Workflow & Reporting Automation

The Friday-afternoon report an Aurora owner reads over coffee because it generated itself at 6am. The onboarding sequence triggered by a single form submission. The seasonal-staffing schedule that assembles itself from availability instead of a manager’s Sunday night. The reconciliation running on a cron instead of an intern. The boring, expensive manual work, deleted.

STACK: Cron · Triggers · PDF generation · Email/SMS
BUILD 06 · SAAS MVPS

SaaS Product MVPs

For Aurora founders building a first product, including the ones coming out of the SBDC at Waubonsee’s downtown campus with a validated idea and no technical co-founder. Auth, billing, multi-tenant data, an admin panel, marketing site, and the core feature loop: live in 8–12 weeks. We ship the MVP, you take it to market, and we stay on for iteration if it works.

STACK: Next.js · Stripe billing · Multi-tenant Postgres · Admin
Process / How a Build Actually Goes

Custom software is a relationship, not a transaction.

A custom application project is not a 2-week handoff like a marketing site. It is a 1–4 month build, then ongoing iteration. Here’s how we run it.

PHASE01
Discovery & Scoping
A 60–90 minute working session (in person if you’re in Aurora, on Zoom if you’re not) where we map your current process, identify the actual problem, and decide whether custom software is even the right answer. Sometimes it isn’t, and we say so. If it is, you get a written fixed-scope proposal within a week.
PHASE02
Design & Architecture
Wireframes, the data model, an integration plan for whatever your Aurora office already runs on, and a clickable prototype where it earns its keep. You see the screens before a line of production code exists. Changes cost hours at this stage; the same changes after the build cost days, so we spend the extra meeting here on purpose.
PHASE03
Build in Sprints
Working features every one to two weeks on a staging environment your Aurora team can poke at from their own desks. No three-month silence ending in a surprise demo. You’re clicking through real software inside the first sprint, and your front-desk staff’s complaints get fixed while the code is still warm.
PHASE04
Launch & Hand-off
Production deployment, data migration off the old spreadsheets, staff training at your Aurora location or over Zoom, and written documentation. You get the code, the database, the deployment scripts, and admin access to everything. No vendor lock-in: you could fire us tomorrow and any competent developer could pick it up Monday.
PHASE05
Maintenance & Iteration
Most Aurora clients keep us on a small monthly retainer for security patches, bug fixes, and feature additions. No long contracts. Cancel any month. The relationship continues only as long as it’s worth it for both sides.

Selected Work / Recent Builds

Recent commercial work: honest about geography.

Not every project below is an Aurora client. The studio is based here but we serve clients across the country. The relevant thing is the shape of the work: each of these involved either custom-coded application logic, a back-end integration, or a long-running content infrastructure that doesn’t fit a template.

FAQ / Aurora Custom Web Apps

Frequently asked questions about custom application work in Aurora.

Yes. Web design is a marketing site: the pages, content, and contact forms that get an Aurora business found on Google. Custom web application development is software: an internal portal your staff logs into every morning, an intake system your patients use, a dispatch tool your field crews live in, an automation that connects QuickBooks to your CRM. Different stack, longer build, ongoing relationship. We do both from the same Aurora studio, but they are very different projects, and if you’re not sure which one you actually need, the discovery call usually clears it up in 20 minutes.

No-code tools are great until your business actually depends on them. Then the per-seat pricing climbs, the export options vanish, and you find out your data lives behind somebody else’s login. Offshore shops are cheap up front, but the timezone gap and turnover make multi-month projects painful.

Hunter Creative Media & Design is a hand-built studio in Aurora. Same time zone, same area code, code you own, and an actual person who picks up the phone when something breaks at 2pm on a Thursday. For Aurora businesses where the software is genuinely load-bearing, that proximity matters more than people realize until they need it.

Healthcare practices around the Rush Copley and Mercy Medical Center corridors needing patient intake or referral portals; multi-location service contractors running dispatch out of West Aurora; financial planners and CPAs needing secure client document portals; east-side logistics and light-manufacturing operators with Caterpillar-era processes still living on spreadsheets; retail and hospitality operators in the Chicago Premium Outlets orbit wrestling seasonal staffing; downtown venues and arts organizations managing memberships and event nights; real estate teams managing transaction pipelines; and a growing wave of Aurora SaaS founders building their first product. The common thread: a real workflow that needs real software.

Focused tools (an internal dashboard for one workflow, a client portal, a single-purpose automation) typically land between $4,000 and $12,000. Multi-module platforms with user roles, integrations, and recurring billing run $15,000 to $60,000 and up. Every Aurora project gets a fixed-scope written quote after discovery, so there are no hourly-billing surprises, and hosting, maintenance, and future features are scoped separately so you can see exactly what the ongoing relationship costs before you commit.

Yes, and for most Aurora projects this is the whole point. We build APIs and integrations against QuickBooks, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Stripe, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Twilio, the major Realtor MLS feeds, and most practice-management and healthcare-adjacent tools that expose an API. If your existing stack works, we don’t replace it. We connect it, so your team keeps the tools they know and stops re-typing data between them.

Ask three things. First, will they show you working software every couple of weeks, or do they disappear for months? Second, who owns the code when it’s done: if the answer involves their proprietary platform, you’re renting, not buying. Third, can you actually meet them? A developer you can sit across a table from in Aurora, who knows what Farnsworth traffic looks like on an outlet-mall Saturday and why an Ogden Avenue practice can’t just “switch EHRs”, will scope your project more honestly than a sales engineer three time zones away.

We’re based in Aurora, we publish our process on this page, and the discovery call is free, which makes the vetting pretty cheap.
