How We Rebuilt the QCAA Foundation’s Website to Match Their Mission
Nonprofit organizations have a unique web design challenge: they need to communicate impact, build credibility, and drive action, all while speaking to multiple audiences at once. Donors, volunteers, scholarship applicants, community members, and corporate partners all land on the same site expecting to find what they need.
The Quad County African American Foundation (QCAA) was struggling with exactly that. Their website wasn’t telling their story. So we rebuilt it.
01 The Problem: A Powerful Mission Hidden Behind a Weak Website
QCAA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering African American entrepreneurs across four Northern Illinois counties: Kane, Kendall, DuPage, and Will. They provide grants, mentorship, financial support, and community programming including their signature Jazz Brunch event and annual scholarship program.
The impact is real. The work is meaningful. But the website? It wasn’t keeping up.

Here’s what we were working with:
- Outdated design that didn’t reflect the professionalism of the organization
- Cluttered navigation: donors, applicants, and community members all had to hunt for what they needed
- No impact data: the site talked about the mission but never showed the scale of the problem or the foundation’s role in solving it
- Weak calls to action: no clear path for someone who wanted to donate, apply for a scholarship, or attend an event
- Poor mobile experience: a huge problem when you’re trying to reach community members who primarily browse on phones
For a nonprofit, your website is your storefront, your annual report, and your fundraising pitch all rolled into one. QCAA’s wasn’t doing any of those jobs well.
02 What We Built: An Impact-Driven Digital Presence
We rebuilt the site from scratch with a clear hierarchy of goals: communicate impact, build trust, drive donations and engagement.
Leading With Data That Demands Attention
The old site talked about supporting African American entrepreneurs. The new site shows you exactly why that support matters, with a county-by-county statistics table showing the number of Black-owned businesses across the Quad County region (5,798 in DuPage, 2,460 in Kane, 500 in Kendall, 2,869 in Will).
Numbers hit differently than vague mission statements. When a potential donor sees hard data about the communities QCAA serves, the conversation shifts from “that sounds nice” to “how can I help?”
Post-Pandemic Context That Creates Urgency
We added a highlighted blockquote section explaining the challenges Black-owned businesses face in the post-pandemic economy and how the foundation provides critical support. This contextual storytelling turns passive visitors into engaged supporters by connecting the mission to the moment.
Clear Donor Messaging
“Donors Are Vital Catalysts for Growth” isn’t just a tagline. It’s the heading of a dedicated section that explains exactly how donations translate into entrepreneurial support. We built the site so that every scroll reinforces the value of contributing.
Multi-Audience Navigation
Scholarship applicants can find the scholarship section. Event attendees can find the Jazz Brunch. Donors see prominent giving CTAs. Corporate partners see the partnership opportunities. Each audience has a clear path without the site feeling cluttered.
Design That Reflects Heritage and Growth
The color palette tells a story: deep green for growth and prosperity, burgundy for strength and heritage, gold for excellence and achievement. The serif headings (Playfair Display) give the site gravitas, while the clean body font (Inter) keeps everything readable and modern.
03 The Technical Side: Performance Meets Purpose
Nonprofits often get stuck with bloated WordPress sites because “that’s what nonprofits use.” We took a different approach:
- Hand-coded HTML/CSS: no page builder overhead, no unnecessary plugins, no security vulnerabilities from outdated themes
- Scroll reveal animations: sections animate in as you scroll (left, right, and fade-in effects), keeping visitors engaged through the full page
- Interactive statistics: the impact data section uses styled data tables that make numbers feel tangible
- Mobile-first responsive design: every section works on every device, because the community QCAA serves is primarily mobile
- Fast load times: when your audience includes people on varied connection speeds across four counties, performance isn’t a nice-to-have
04 Why This Matters for Nonprofits
Too many nonprofits treat their website as an afterthought, something you build once and forget about. But here’s the reality: your website is often the first thing a potential donor sees. It’s where grant committees go to verify your legitimacy. It’s where community members decide whether to show up to your next event.
If your site looks like it was built five years ago, people unconsciously question whether your organization is still active, still relevant, still deserving of their time and money. That’s not fair, but it’s true.
QCAA Foundation now has a digital presence that matches the quality and importance of their work. The site doesn’t just describe their mission. It makes you want to be part of it.
